If you've chosen Cape Town, South Africa, as your next travel destination, congratulations. It is, undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful cities in the world and has a captivating laid-back atmosphere that relaxes even the most stressed out visitor within hours. You can have the holiday experience of a lifetime - especially if you find the right place to stay. There's a good range of accommodation available but nowadays, many experienced travellers are rejecting the typical, 4-star chain hotels (been there: done that) in favour of original, sometimes even quirky, owner-managed guest houses that offer personalized service on a hotel level but in an atmosphere of privacy. It's the new exclusivity.

Sundowner guest house is such a place. A concept initiative of Anglo-Austrian owners, Michael Kohla and Cherry Crowden, Sundowner first opened its doors in 2003 and has since welcomed a stream of overseas visitors, mostly from Switzerland and Germany but also from Great Britain.

Nestled halfway up the hillside of Camps Bay, one of Cape Town's most desirable locations, it boasts an impressive 360° view of the Atlantic coastline, Table Mountain, the Twelve Apostles and Lion's Head - the "Mother City's" famous landmarks. It is also only a few minutes drive from the to-die-for palm-fringed, white sand beach and the fashionable beachfront, known for its hip bistros, bars, cafés and, of course, beautiful people. The main tourist attractions are within easy driving distance, eg. the V&A Waterfront and the city centre are only 15 minutes away; a number of 18-hole championship golf courses can be reached in 30 minutes; and a tour of the Cape Winelands can be done in a day. What more could a holidaymaker ask for?

Guests can choose to stay in the luxurious penthouse unit (breathtaking views) or one of three comfortable bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. Designed for two, each room is furnished with a dynamic mix of European and African décor and there are never more than eight guests at one time. Part of the charm lies in its 'no bigger than a private residence' size and the details: finest quality linen, plush bath towels, bathrobes and luxe toiletries.
Exquisitely-concepted B&B accommodation in Camps Bay, South Africa, for the contemporary traveller looking for an 'out-of-the-ordinary' experience.

Relaxing indoors and outdoors is a vital part of the exclusive package. There is a stylish but informal open plan dining, lounging and bar area leading on to a spacious, wrap around terrace as well as a generous entertainment deck. Bathers can enjoy the heated swimming pool (the Atlantic is a touch too chilly at 16°!) and sun worshippers can bronze at peace in the seclusion of the lush indigenous garden.

When it comes to eating and drinking, here the owner-managers' European influence is unmistakable: breakfast is served à la carte, using locally-sourced ingredients including, seasonal fruit, homemade muesli, free-range eggs, Cape cheeses, continental-style cold meats, herbs straight from the herb garden, crisply baked loaves and croissants.

A sundowner before dinner, or a digestif after: what could be more civilized? The Sundowner bar is kept well-stocked with premium wines from the Cape vineyards, Cape brandies and a variety of refreshing South African beers. Not in the mood to dine out? A small menu of delicious snacks is available in the evening.

What really makes the difference? To make their overseas visitors' stay in South Africa an enjoyable and memorable one, Michael and Cherry offer a customized concierge service. As well as scheduling a golf tee time, reserving a table at the perfect restaurant, organizing a sight-seeing tour or a wine-tasting session, they will gladly assist their guests plan their holiday upfront. They compile tailor-made itineraries according to their specific interests and make the necessary arrangements and bookings locally.
